Garden History & Horticulture Internship

View of gardens with Ten Broeck Mansion in background.The Albany County Historical Association, which operates the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion as a community-centered museum, seeks undergraduate or graduate interns specializing in horticulture, environmental studies, landscape design, museum studies, and history for the following internship project:

  • Assistance with garden and historic landscape inventory & photo documentation (approximately 3 acre site)
  • Moving of selected plants from garden beds to temporary beds (heeling in)
  • Propagation of selected cuttings from shrubs
  • Research of historic plant varieties and identification of stock/plant sources
  • Opportunity to develop brochure, poster, or give a public-facing program.
  • Watering, light mulching/weeding of temporary beds, and/or coordinating garden volunteers
  • Project will allow ability to observe and learn from museum staff, historians, landscape architects, architects, and archaeologists working at historic site.
  • The Garden History & Horticulture Internship represents a unique opportunity to be a part of a museum team researching and implementing a mid-19th century garden at a community-centered museum in historic Albany, New York.

Requirements: Selected applicant must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, use manual garden equipment (trowel, shovels, rakes), kneel/bend, use a wheelbarrow, lift up to 25 lbs., and work in warm conditions (site is shaded with easy access to indoor spaces).  Intern is asked to provide own work footwear (light boots or sturdy close-toed shoes) and clothing suitable for working in gardens in a public setting.  ACHA will provide all other tools, gloves, and equipment, and professional contractor support for large projects. Intern will work independently, with ACHA museum staff, and other ACHA garden volunteers.  Excellent teamwork skills sought.

  • Intern compensation: 100-150 hours: $1500-$2250.
